Aggies Garner Big 12 Academic Honors

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Four members of the Texas A&M volleyball team have been named to the 2009 Academic All-Big 12 Team, the league office announced today. Sarah Ammerman (Parker, Colo.), Jola Kelner (Bielsko-Biala, Poland) and Chelsea Ringel (Arlington, Texas) were all named to the first team. Mary Batis (San Antonio, Texas) was named to the second team for the third consecutive year. Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and media relations offices, the 2009 volleyball academic all-league squad consists of 43 first team members combined with nine on the second team. First team members have recorded a 3.20 or better grade-point average, while the second team are those with a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA. To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or in the two previous semesters and have participated in 60 percent of her team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible. Ammerman, majoring in university studies, is a four-year starter as an outside hitter. She currently leads the Aggies and is ranked second in the Big 12 with 4.3 kills and 4.73 points per set. Kelner, a senior allied health major, is a four-year letterwinner and key reserve setter for the Aggies, She has played in 15 matches this season, drawing one start in which she led the Aggies to a season-high .465 hitting percentage in a sweep at Texas Tech.
Ringel, a sophomore special education major, has seen action in 17 matches this season and is typically the first off the bench as a key back-up outside hitter or defensive specialist. Batis, a senior outside hitter majoring in sport management, has started every match in her career and ranks in the top 10 in A&M career records for points, kills and digs. She currently leads the team with 3.36 digs per set and is third on the team for both kills (2.86) and points (3.23) per set. The Aggies (14-10, 7-9 Big 12) return to action Wednesday, taking on the Oklahoma Sooners at McCasland Field House in Norman. First serve is at 7 p.m. |
