WACO, Texas - The Texas A&M women's tennis team was impressive on the first day of the HEB Baylor Invitational, going a combined 10-3 in singles and 4-0 in doubles at the Baylor Tennis Center.

"We came away with some excellent wins, and I'm very proud of our showing today," A&M coach Bobby Kleinecke said. "But we are not finished and the competition will get more and more challenging, so it will be important that we continue to play with the same effort, intensity and fire as we close out the fall season."

In singles, sophomores Lauren Santacroce (Spring, Texas) and Sheri Olivier (Topeka, Kan.) picked up two straight-set wins apiece to reach the round of 16. Junior Stephanie Davidson (Fair Oaks Ranch, Texas) also reached the round of 16, as her first opponent retired after dropping the first set and then Davidson got a three-set victory over Karolina Filipiak of Baylor.

No. 3 seed Elzé Potgieter (South Africa), No. 4 seed Morgan Frank (Oldsmar, Fla.) and No. 7 seed Nazari Urbina (Mexico), all of A&M, each had first-round byes and earned straight set wins in the second round.

Aggie sophomore Ashley Turpin (New Braunfels, Texas) won her first-round match in straight sets but fell to No. 5 seed Sona Novakova of Armstrong, 6-2, 6-4, in the round of 32.

A&M sophomore Janelle Cuthbertson (Perth, Australia) had a first-round bye and then faced No. 6 seed Abigail Guthrie of Ole Miss. Guthrie won the second-round match, 6-1, 6-3.

Senior Christina Amo also had a first-found bye and fell in straight sets to No. 2 seed Csilla Borsanyi of Baylor in the round of 32.

Olivier and Urbina got a huge opening win in doubles as they knocked off No. 1 seed Borsanyi and Taylor Ormond of Baylor, 8-5, in the round of 16. Davidson and Frank reached the quarterfinals by defeating Maria Martinez and Nikola Matovicova of UTA, 8-1.

No. 4 seed Cuthbertson and Potgieter teamed to defeat Narina Kazarova and Madura Ranganathan of North Texas, 8-2, to advance to the quarterfinals, and Santacroce and Turpin also advanced with an 8-4 victory over Ashley Akin and Shannon MacKenzie of North Texas.
