Texas A&M Swimming & Diving Heads to Houston for Cougar Classic
Nov. 19, 2009
The No. 8 Texas A&M women’s swimming and diving team will be seeking wins and fast times as it continues its fall schedule at the Cougar Classic Fall Invitational Friday through Sunday at the University of Houston’s Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Natatorium. Prelims and finals are scheduled to start at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., respectively, on Friday and Saturday. On Sunday, prelims will start at 10 a.m. with the finals slated to start at 4:30 p.m. Other teams scheduled to compete at the meet include, Kansas, SMU, LSU, UNLV, Incarnate Word, Tulane, Air Force and the host Cougars. “We’re giving the team a little bit of rest and putting on a racing suit, and we’ll see how the girls perform,” Aggie head coach Steve Bultman said. “We’ve done this the last few years and gotten some outstanding swims out of it. We’ve had some girls qualify for NCAAs at this meet with basically two days rest. It’s really good for the freshmen because they actually experience a meet that will be similar to what they will see at conference and hopefully nationals. It’s a learning experience for them.” The Aggies go to the Cougar Classic with a 1-1 record in dual meets and with a victory at the annual Big 12 Relays. A&M was No. 8 in the initial College Swim Coach Association of America Top 25 poll that was released this week. Georgia ranked No. 1 with 12 first-place votes followed by Stanford, Arizona, Texas, Florida, defending NCAA Champion California, Auburn and the Aggies.
“I’m very pleased with where the team is now,” Bultman said. “We won the Big 12 Relays and then beat Missouri at their pool. Even though we lost to Texas, we had some great performances there, both swimming and diving. I think the divers have done a great job and really pulled together without a full-time coach here on a regular basis. I think we’re in a good place right now, and I’m excited to go to Houston and see how fast the girls are going to swim with a little bit of rest.” |
