Texas A&M's Wilkinson Named Big 12 Swimmer of the Week
Oct. 28, 2009
Texas A&M senior Julia Wilkinson announced her triumphant return to the pool by taking the first Big 12 Swimmer of the Week honor of the season after a pair of strong performances at the Big 12 Relays and a dual meet against conference foe Missouri. For Wilkinson, it was her sixth career Big 12 weekly honor but her first in more than a year since the native of Stratford, Ontario, Canada missed all of last season due to shoulder surgery. In her first collegiate action since the 2008 NCAA Championships, Wilkinson swam on a team-best four winning relays while leading the Aggies to an upset victory at the Big 12 Relays and then tacked on four more wins (three individual and one relay) in A&M's 171-129 victory over Missouri. At the Big 12 Relays, Wilkinson swam legs on the 3x100 backstroke relay, the 400 free relay, the 400 medley relay and the 4x100 IM relay. The next day, Wilkinson was dominant with wins in 100 back (54.96), the 100 free (50.19) and the 200 IM (2:03.55), and swam a leg on the winning 200 medley relay. Also taking Big 12 weekly honors were diver Meg Proehl of Kansas on the women's side, while Texas Longhorns Ricky Berens and Drew Livingston swept the swimming and diving honors, respectively, on the men's side.
