Heiss, Marshall Named to 2008-09 USA National Team
Sept. 17, 2008
COLLEGE STATION--Texas A&M swimmers Kristen Heiss (Casper, Wyo.) and Christine Marshall (Newport News, Va.) have been named to the 2008-09 USA Swimming National Team. The six fastest American swimmers in each event were named to the U.S. squad based on times swam at the 2008 Olympic Games, Olympic Trials, and U.S. Open. Heiss made the team in two events, the 200-meter backstroke and the 400-meter freestyle. Heiss earned the silver medal at the U.S. Open in Minneapolis last month in both events, swimming times of 2:09.99 and 4:09.25, respectively. She also finished fifth at the U.S. Olympic Trials in the 200-meter backstroke, the highest finish by any A&M swimmer, male or female, in school history. Marshall made the U.S. National Team in the 200-meter freestyle, an event that made her the first swimmer in Texas A&M history to represent the United States at the Olympics. Marshall went on to earn a bronze medal on the 800-meter freestyle relay team, becoming A&M's first female Olympic swimming medalist. "We have worked hard as a program to try and get girls to focus on the national and international level," A&M head coach Steve Bultman said. "These two have worked hard and done a lot of great things and are now reaping the benefits of their hard work. This shows people that we are doing some very good things here at Texas A&M with our swimming program."
