COLLEGE STATION - Texas A&M junior Alia Atkinson (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) has been named the Counsilman Hunsaker National Collegiate Swimmer-of-the-Week, CollegeSwimming.com announced on Tuesday.

Atkinson was awarded the honor after winning both breaststroke races against No. 6 Auburn and Florida State in Tallahassee, Fla., last Saturday. The two-time Jamaican Olympian earned NCAA consideration times, winning the 100 breast in 1:01.70 and the 200 breast in 2:13.76. She also set a season best time of 23.70 in the 50 free in leading off the fifth-place 200-yard freestyle relay team.

Atkinson has yet to drop a breaststroke race all season long and is the two-time reigning Big 12 champion in both breaststrokes. Atkinson owns seven Jamaican national records, including the 200-meter breaststroke mark (2:29.53) that she set at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. She made the NCAA Championship final in both breaststrokes in 2008, earning a career-best third-place finish with an all-time Big 12 record time of 2:09.48 in the 200 breast.

The back-to-back Big 12 champion Texas A&M women's swimming & diving team is currently preparing for the 2009 Big 12 Championships scheduled for Columbia, Mo., on Feb. 25-28. The Aggies will host the NCAA Championships on March 19-21 at the Student Rec Center Natatorium.
