Aggie Women Overpower Cougars

The No. 6 Texas A&M women’s swimming and diving team overpowered the Houston Cougars, 177-110, on Friday at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Natatorium on the University of Houston campus. The Aggies improved their season dual meet record to 6-1 with their fifth straight victory. A&M won 13 of 16 possible events against the Cougars, and had at least a 1-2 finish in the 13 victories, including both relays. A&M’s fifth-year seniors Kristin Heiss and Julia Wilkinson led the way with a pair of individual victories, and Heiss also swam on the winning 400 free relay. Heiss hit the wall first in the 200 free in 1:49.56 and the 500 free in 4:52.04, while Wilkinson won the 200 backstroke in 1:58.33 and the 200 IM in 2:02.19. Grabbing solo victories were freshman Liz Nelson in the 1,000 free (10:05.23), freshman Tess Simpson in the 100 back (56.24), sophomore Rita Medrano in the 200 fly (2:00.85), junior Maria Sommer in the 50 free (23.45), senior Sarah Woods in the 100 free (50.67), senior Alia Atkinson in the 200 breast (2:16.76) and freshman Kendra Chernoff in the 100 fly (55.39).
The Aggies took the top two spots in the 200 medley relay with the foursome of Simpson, Atkinson, senior Ella Doerge and Sommer hitting the wall in 1:43.91 and the quartet of Wilkinson, sophomore Megan Onstott, Chernoff and Woods taking second in 1:44.17. A&M closed the meet with a 1-2 finish in the 400 free relay with Doerge, junior Hannah Kinder, Sommer and Heiss grabbing first in 3:27.61 and Simpson, Allyson Sweeney, sophomore Megan Latone and freshman Kristina Kontrimas placing second in 3:31.44. The Aggies return to the water on Saturday with a 1 p.m. dual meet against North Texas on Senior Day. Competing in the final home dual meet of their careers will be 11 seniors: Alia Atkinson, Ella Doerge, Melissa Hain, Haley Haynes, Kristin Heiss, Renee Iserman, Rebekah Love, Emily Neal, Emily Watson, Julia Wilkinson and Sarah Woods. |
