Dumezich Named Gatorade Indiana Player of the Year

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Texas A&M softball signee, Mel Dumezich was named the Gatorade Indiana Player of the Year, the organization announced. From Whiting, Ind., Dumezich earned the award for outstanding athletic excellence, high academic achievement and exemplary personal character on and off the field. The Under Armour All-American is a three-time Hammond Times Softball Player of the Year and two-time Post Tribune Softball Player of the Year. She was also recognized as the Times Female Athlete of the Year as a junior. The right-handed pitcher owns eight state records - including 1,651 strikeouts, 107 career wins, 73 shutouts, 32 no-hitters, a 0.22 ERA, 116 games started and 194 runs scored. Dumezich led Whiting High School to two undefeated seasons and two state championships in addition to earning all-state, all-area and all-conference honors all four years of high school. She was the all-state rookie of the year as a freshman. Ranked as one of the top 20 recruits in the nation by ESPNU, Dumezich was a cover girl for ESPN's Rise Magazine earlier this year. She finished her senior season with a 19-3 record in the circle, a 0.10 ERA and 383 strikeouts. She also hit .544 with 36 RBIs and 38 runs scored. Dumezich plays travel ball for the Illinois Southern Force who finished second at the ASA Nationals in 2007 and fourth at nationals in 2008. She is on the honor roll and a member of the German club and the booster club. Dumezich and the 2009-10 Texas A&M softball team begins training this fall at the Aggie Softball Complex.
