Aggies Tally 20 Hits in Doubleheader Sweep
Oct. 19, 2009
COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Texas A&M softball team tallied 20 hits in a doubleheader sweep against McLennan on Monday evening at the Aggie Softball Complex. The Aggies won 7-0 and 5-0, while sophomore Rebecca Arbino and junior Lindsey Sisk combined for 18 strikeouts to improve A&M to 6-2 in its fall competition. "I'm pleased with the way we played tonight," said head coach Jo Evans. "It is fun for me to see how we've made a lot of progress since we first started and I think the players are feeling good about themselves. I feel like we got better this fall and it'll be fun going into the Maroon and White Series tomorrow where it's going to be very competitive and very heated, and I think the team is excited about it." The Aggies got out to a quick lead in game one after freshman Lauren Schwirtlich and sophomore Kelsea Orsak led off with back-to-back singles, and freshman Meagan May scored the pair of base runners with a two-run double to left center. A&M loaded the bases in the third before sophomore Eden Morris collected an RBI on a walk. Schwirtlich then singled up the middle to plate junior Kelsey Spittler and freshman Mel Dumezich, and give the Aggies a 5-2 lead. In the fourth frame, junior Rhi Kliesing laced a two-run shot to left center to put A&M up 7-0.
Arbino picked up the win in the circle after allowing just one hit, one walk and striking out eight. She only faced 22 batters. "Becca threw really well," said Evans. "She had two fly-ball outs the whole game and stayed ahead of hitters the entire time. She looked a lot like she did late last year in games against Texas and Baylor and I'm really encouraged by that." In the second game, it took the Aggies until the second inning to get on the scoreboard. Dumezich singled through the left side with one out and scored from second on a base hit to center field by junior Kara Rau. With two outs in the fourth, Dumezich made the score 2-0 with a solo shot to left center. It was her second home run of the fall. The Aggies led off the sixth inning with four consecutive hits, including a two-run single to left center by senior Macie Morrow and an RBI double to right center by freshman Sydney Shannon. Junior Missy Siegel led off the frame with a double before Spittler singled through the left side. Sisk got the win in game two after giving up six hits, walking none and fanning 10 batters. Orsak led the offense going 5-for-7 with one run scored, while Schwirtlich went 4-for-8 in the lead-off spot with two RBIs and a run. Senior Alex Reynolds added two walks and scored a run. The Maroon and White Series begins tomorrow at 3:45 p.m. at the Aggie Softball Complex. The Texas A&M softball team splits into two squads and competes for the honor of a best-of-three series. |
