The Bored Board

This week we saw the reemergence of what I shall affectionately refer to as "The Bored Board." At the front of our soccer meeting room we have two large dry erase boards and a Smart Board (the 21st century, electronic Swiss army knife of dry erase boards).

When I first got here, one of the first soccer traditions I was introduced to was hangman. It feels like anytime we were all in our seats waiting for the coaches to come in, someone would jump up (Melissa, Suzzette, Annie...) and start a game of hangman. And like all good Aggies, I'm sure you can imagine the first letters we guessed. A-G-G-I-E-S we would all yell out in unison. This wasn't just every now and then either. EVERY time we played, which was literally every day, we would start in this manner. After about the 100th time you would think I'd get tired of it, but still to this day I can't help but laugh as I yell out the letters. Some things never get old. Unfortunately, as the original ringleaders began to graduate, the tradition slumped, until this week Cydne Currie thankfully came to the rescue as she galloped up to the board and with tremendous showmanship and led an energetic game of hangman.

Inevitably the majority of the hangman's are: BTHO "whoever we are playing". This makes the answer fairly predictable, but the rules state you must raise your hand, be called on, and then pick each individual letter before solving. On Friday, it was of course BTHO CU. While we all knew this, it was much more fun to make up our own. One girl added a dash: BTHO CYD?? Love you Cydne!

While most hangman's are predictable, some definitely are not. In fact, if you have any sort of announcement for the team, hangman is a viable form of communication. How did one girl tell another girl on the team she was dating her brother? Hangman, of course!

Hangman is definitely the most popular Bored Board game, but certainly not the only one. With each new class comes a new game. Lisel, a fantastic cartoonist, has taken to drawing hilarious pictures of each of us. Most have absolutely no resemblance except one exaggerated feature which makes them that much more entertaining.

Another fun game is to see who can draw the best picture with their eyes closed. Two girls will go up to the board and close their eyes while standing in their competitive drawing stance. "Camel!" someone will yell out as they race to draw their best camel without looking. Pure entertainment! My favorite was when someone yelled "the U.S." I think the majority of us would struggle drawing an outline of the U.S. with our eyes open. I never knew we had so many peninsulas...

Moral of this blog: It's impossible to ever be truly bored on our team. There are far too many entertaining things to do.

Freshman Words of Wisdom:

For some reason our field had a strange stench on Friday night when we played Colorado. During the game one of the girls commented, "It smells like manure!" Another girl wittily remarked, "It must be all the Buffaloes." Instantly, one of the girls who should know better (she might be from Colorado) started looking around excitedly, "There are buffaloes?! Where?!" You just can't joke with some people...
