Three Aggies Earn National Honors
Nov. 17, 2009 COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Three players from the 22nd-ranked Texas A&M soccer team earned national honors this week from TopDrawerSoccer.com (TDS) and CollegeSoccer360.com (CS360). Senior Emily Peterson was selected as a CS360 Primetime Performer of the Week, while junior Rachel Shipley was named honorable mention on the TDS Women's College Soccer Team of the Season and freshman Mary Grace Schmidt was recognized on the TDS All-Rookie second team. Peterson collected her honor after she tallied a goal and an assist in the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament. Against Memphis, she set up junior Whitney Hooper's game-winner to mark her fifth career assist. Then, on Sunday, the Tulsa, Okla., native netted the second goal of her career that forced a penalty kick shootout against No. 10 LSU to advance the Aggies to the round of 16 for the 10th time in program history. The three points were the first from the central defender since her freshman year. Shipley leads Texas A&M with 25 points, including eight goals and a team-high nine assists, and earned the TDS award for the first time. This season the midfielder from Plano, Texas, was also an All-Big 12 first team selection and was chosen to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District second team and the Academic All-Big 12 first team. A product of Orange, Calif., Schmidt picked up her second honor of the season after being named to the All-Big 12 Newcomer team. The central defender started the season in the midfield, but after being moved to the back line the Aggies have only allowed seven goals in their last 12 games.
A&M continues its run for a national championship this Friday as it travels to Tallahassee, Fla., to face top-seeded Florida State in the third round of the NCAA Tournament. See the complete release of both honors at the links below: |
