Soccer Places Four on Academic All-Big 12 Team

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The 20th-ranked Texas A&M soccer team placed four members on the Academic All-Big 12 team as announced by the conference office on Tuesday. Senior Emily Peterson and junior Rachel Shipley were named to the first team and junior Nicole Ketchum and sophomore Bri Young were selected to the second team. Each Aggie received the league honors based on academic excellence and athletic involvement. Peterson (Tulsa, Okla.) is now a three-time Academic All-Big 12 honoree and Shipley (Plano, Texas) picked up the first-team award for the second straight year. Both players were also recently named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District second team. Ketchum (Cypress, Texas) is another Aggie who is making her second appearance on the conference's academic team, while Young (Castle Pines North, Colo.) is a first time award winner who is also the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week. Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the soccer academic all-league squad consisted of 84 first team members combined with 19 on the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA. To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of her team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
The second-seeded Aggies take on No. 7 seed Baylor at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Blossom Soccer Stadium in San Antonio, Texas. |
