Dec. 22, 2008
IRVING, Texas - Texas A&M's Adaora Elonu (pronounced uh-DOOR-uh EE-lawn-ew) was tabbed co-Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Women's Basketball Freshman of the Week as announced by the league office on Monday for games of Dec. 15-21. A 6-foot-1 freshman forward from Houston, Texas, Elonu turned in her fourth double-digit game of the season with 10 points on 5-of-8 shooting in a 64-50 victory over No. 24 TCU on Dec. 21. She also added a career-high two blocked shots along with two steals and four rebounds in just 24 minutes of action versus the Lady Frogs. It marked her third career weekly honor next to being selected on Nov. 24 and Dec. 8. Elonu was one of two A&M players to score in double figures against TCU which led the No. 3 nationally-ranked Aggies to a school-record 10-0 start and their first-ever unbeaten streak heading into the holiday break. She has reached double figures in three of her last four contests and ranks third on the team in scoring (7.8 ppg) and rebounding (5.8 rpg) which is third-and second-best among Big 12 Conference freshmen leaders respectively. The Aggies have now claimed freshmen weekly honors a total of five times this season with redshirt freshman and preseason Big 12 Conference Freshman of the Year Tyra White receiving a nod on Nov. 1 and freshman reserve point guard Sydney Carter on Dec. 1. Elonu shared this week's honors with Yvonne Anderson of Texas who tallied eight points and three rebounds in an 81-71 win over No. 21 Arizona State on Dec. 18.
