Adams Tabbed Preseason Big 12 Conference Newcomer of the Year
Oct. 7, 2009
IRVING, Texas - Texas A&M junior Danielle Adams (Kansas City, Mo.) was named Big 12 Conference Newcomer of the Year as the women's basketball preseason awards list was announced by the league office on Wednesday. Adams is the second consecutive Aggie to earn Preseason Newcomer of the Year honors next to senior Tanisha Smith (Kansas City, Mo.) who earned the same title during the 2008-09 season as a junior transfer from Arkansas-Fort Smith. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own players. Adams, a 6-foot-1 combination forward/center, was named National Junior College Player of the Year by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association after averaging 22.1 points and 2.8 blocks per game for Jefferson College (Mo.) last season. She led her squad to a 34-1 record with its only loss in the NJCAA national championship game. A two-time first-team JUCO All-American, Adams led the nation in scoring as a freshman with 28.0 points per contest. Smith, a six-foot combination guard/forward, garnered preseason All-Big 12 honorable mention honors and is the team's top returning player having averaged 10.6 points and 3.6 rebounds per game a year ago as a significant starter on the Aggies' NCAA Sweet 16 squad. She was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Year and to the Big 12 All-Tournament team as A&M made its second-straight appearance in the conference tournament title game.
