Adams, Smith and Carter Earn All-Big 12 Nods

IRVING, Texas - Three Texas A&M women's basketball players earned all-league nods as the 2009-10 Phillips 66 All-Big 12 Conference Women's Basketball Awards were announced on Monday. Danielle Adams, a 6-foot-1 junior forward/center from Kansas City, Mo., was voted Big 12 Newcomer of the Year. It marked the second consecutive year in which an Aggie earned top newcomer of the honors next to Tanisha Smith in 2009. Adams is currently averaging a team-leading 15.6 points and 5.6 rebounds while primarily coming off the bench. Her point average ranks ninth in the Big 12. She is also the team's top shot blocker (42) and from her center position is a threat from the three-point line. Adams has connected on 21 treys which is tied for second on the squad. She was selected as Big 12 Player of the Week after recording her first career triple-double with a career-high 27 points, 12 rebounds and a school single-game record 10 blocks against Texas Tech on January 23. Adams was also named to the second team. Smith, a six-foot senior combination guard/forward from Kansas City, Mo., earned first team honors and leads the team in steals (64) which ranks second best in the Big 12. She recently turned in her first career 100+ assist season (101) and ranks second on the team in scoring (15.2 ppg) and rebounding (5.3 rpg). Smith garnered Big 12 Player of the Week honors after being tabbed the Colliers International Classic Tournament MVP on Dec. 7. Since her arrival in Aggieland, she has registered four double-doubles, six 20-point games and four double-digit rebound games. Sydney Carter, a 5-foot-6 sophomore point guard from DeSoto, Texas, was named honorable mention. She currently ranks 13th nationally with an impressive 2.32 assist-to-turnover ratio which ranks second best in the Big 12 through all games played. Last year, she earned a spot on the 2009 Big 12 All-Freshman Team and has started in the last six-straight contests for the Aggies in league play. Carter dished out a career-high seven assists with zero turnovers versus No. 11 Oklahoma on March 2. She is four assists shy of registered her first career 100+ assist season (96).
