Starks Named Big 12 Conference Player Of The Week

IRVING, Texas - Texas A&M senior All-America candidate Takia Starks (Houston, Texas) was named Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week as selected Monday by a media voting panel for games of Dec. 22-Jan. 4.

Starks picked up her second career weekly award next to being honored on Jan. 15, 2007, while Texas Tech's Kierra Mallard was recognized for the first time of her career as Big 12 Freshman of the Week.

Starks led No. 3 Texas A&M to a 2-0 record over the holiday break to extend the Aggies' school-record start to an undefeated 12-0 on the season which matches their longest win streak in program history. Starks knocked down a season-high 24 points paired with five rebounds and five assists in the team's third win over a top 25 opponent with an 83-51 rout of No. 25 New Mexico on Dec. 30. Three days later, she paced the Aggies with a game-high 22 points, five rebounds and a career-high six steals versus 2008 NCAA Sweet 16 participant George Washington in a 78-59 victory over the Colonials.

For the week, she averaged a team-leading 23.0 points, 4.5 steals, 5.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 0.5 blocks against the Lobos and Colonials combined. Starks was also on fire connecting on 58.3 percent (7-of-11) of her shots from downtown. She is currently on a five-game double-digit scoring streak including three consecutive 20-point outings for only the third time of her career. Starks is averaging a team-leading 15.3 points per game and ranks third all-time in career scoring with 1,606 career points to date. She is 10 points away from moving into second all-time in career scoring ahead of former player Lisa Langston who compiled 1,615 points from 1982-86.
