Oct. 29, 2009
COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Texas A&M men's tennis head coach Steve Denton has announced the signing of British junior tennis player Niall Angus (pronounced Nile) who will join the Aggies in January for the upcoming 2010 spring season. Angus, a 6-foot-2 freshman right-hander out of London, England, is the sixth newcomer to this year's squad that includes junior transfer Jeff Dadamo (Tampa, Fla.), junior transfer Jack Seider (Austin, Texas), sophomore transfer John Lewis (Birmingham, Ala.), freshman Alberto Bautista (McAllen, Texas) and freshman Beau Blackshear (Brentwood, Tenn.). Last year, the Aggies reached the NCAA Sweet 16 and finished second in the Big 12 Conference. The latest additions to the roster will only boost A&M's chances on the national front this season. "We are really excited to have Niall join our program," Denton said. "He is a very good tennis player, an extremely gifted athlete and has a passion for the game. He loves to play and works really hard. Not only will he help us in singles, but he will also help us in doubles. He fits in really well with our players and he is going to help us over the next couple of years." With an extensive background in international competition, Angus has played in Junior Wimbledon the last two years reaching the round of 32. He also advanced to the quarterfinals of doubles at the Junior Australian Open and played the Junior French Open. Angus, who represented Great Britain on the Junior Summer Cup Team, was ranked as high as No. 51 in the junior ITF world rankings. He is currently ranked No. 1515 in the men's singles world rankings with two ATP points and No. 1117 in the men's doubles rankings with nine ATP points.
"I chose Texas A&M for many reasons," Angus said. "First, for the widely-respected tennis coaches in Coach Denton and Coach (Bob) McKinley. I feel they are the best possible coaches to help me move my tennis game on to the next level and eventually on to the pro circuit. Second, for the friendly and helpful nature of not only my future teammates, but of everyone connected with A&M. The last and most important reason in my decision was the close-knit family feel that comes with being an Aggie. I am really excited to join the team and start my schooling in Aggieland." Nicknamed "Beef," Angus looks to major in sport management at Texas A&M. His father, Eric, also played college tennis at an English University in Durham, England. He enjoys watching soccer and hanging out with friends. |
