Aggies Gear Up for Top-Ranked Longhorns
Feb. 4, 2010
The No. 19 Texas A&M men’s swimming and diving team will honor its senior class when the Aggies host the top-ranked Texas Longhorns in a State Farm Lone Star Showdown dual at 6 p.m. on Friday at the Student Recreation Natatorium. Competing in their last regular season competition in Aggieland are diver Henry Stevens (Midland, Texas) and swimmers Jason Bergstrom (Friendswood, Texas), Nikita Denisyako (Moscow, Russia), Sean Duckworth (New Braunfels, Texas), Nathan Lavery (Port Elizabeth, South Africa), Casey Strange (Houston, Texas) and Tyler Welch (Austin, Texas). The Aggies will also see postseason action in their home pool at the 2010 Big 12 Championships Feb. 24-27. “This is a special group of young men that have all played an important part in the development of the Texas A&M swimming and diving program,” head swimming coach Jay Holmes said. “It’s been very rewarding to watch them improve over the years. It’s a hard-working group that always did everything we asked of them.”
The Aggies (4-1) will be taking on a traditional rival for the third straight week against the Longhorns after posting road victories over No. 17 LSU and No. 24 SMU the previous two weeks. Last weekend the Aggies defeated SMU in Dallas for the first time since 2004 with a scintillating 119-118 win over the Mustangs that came down to the final relay. The Longhorns (4-1) are coming off their first loss of the season, a 187-177 defeat to No. 3 Arizona in Tucson. “Anytime Texas A&M competes against a Longhorn team, it’s a big deal,” Holmes said. “It’s a tremendous rivalry and it’s a great opportunity for the team. It will be great challenge for us and we’re looking forward to the opportunity.” |
