Cyrus Gray Named Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week
Nov. 10, 2008
Cyrus Gray became the second member of Mike Sherman¹s first signing class to earn Big 12 layer of the Week honors after receiving Special Team POW after rolling up a school record 261 kickoff return yards, including a 98-yard touchdown, last week against Oklahoma. Fellow 2008 signee Trent Hunter received Big 12 Defensive kudos after posting 17 tackles in his starting debut vs. Army on 9/16. Gray set a Texas A&M single-game record with 261 kickoff return yards on seven attempts against Oklahoma. It marked the second-most kickoff return yardage in the Big 12 behind Iowa State's Leonard Johnson who had 319 against Oklahoma State on Nov. 1. Gray had a 97-yard return for a touchdown, the first Aggie kickoff return for a score since Kerry Franks took a 99-yarder back against Texas Tech in 2006. He totaled a career-high 294 all-purpose yards in the game for the most since Leeland McElroy established the school record with 359 against LSU in 1995. Gray is closing in on the Big 12 record for kickoff return yards in a season (994 by Nebraska's Josh Davis in 2002) with 988 and two games left on the regular-season schedule.
