TEXAS A&M BASEBALL

COLLEGE STATION, Texas--The back-to-back Big 12 champion Texas A&M baseball team held its third annual Paint-a-Thon this past weekend at the home of Ms. Dorothy Lockett in north Bryan.
The Aggies spent seven hours repainting the exterior of the house, installing new siding, laying fresh mulch and hauling off brush.
"The Paint-a-Thon is always a great way to kick off the season," A&M coach Rob Childress said. "Most importantly, we are able to give back to the community that shows us so much support throughout the year.
"But also, the guys see that the first time they are together as a group they are out there working hard and working with each other. Hard work is one of the main messages we send when we talk about accomplishing our ultimate goal of being the last team standing in Omaha."
Residences that need assistance are found by contacting churches and local organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, The Salvation Army and Elder Aid. The team's first event was held in 2006 at the College Station home of Mr. Al Bradley, while last year's Paint-a-Thon took place at the Bryan residence of Mr. James Nichols.
"It was a good day," Childress said. "Our team got to know each other a little bit while putting in a day of hard work and making a difference in somebody's life. This is an event that is good for everyone and one we will participate in once again next fall."
The Aggies return 15 letterwinners from a 2008 squad that won the Big 12 regular-season title and the NCAA College Station Regional championship. A&M enters the fall having claimed back-to-back regional titles for the first time in school history.
Fall workouts are scheduled to begin on September 15, while the Aggies are slated to open the 2009 season on Friday, Feb. 20 at Olsen Field against Wright State.
