QUOTES:

UCLA Head Coach Billy Martin:

“I thought we played a good match, especially for being the first one down here. I’m always a little nervous seeing how we react to new conditions. We had a little bit of wind although tonight was probably perfect conditions for the eight matches I’ve ever played down here, which I think helped us a lot. I was very happy. I thought we came out and played very good doubles in the beginning and continued on in the singles, although Miami was really starting to give us a great battle there. Holden Seguso doesn’t win that tiebreaker and we were in two tough three sets at four and six. Matt Brooklyn was up against a great player and just one break. I didn’t feel overly confident by any means with that. We hope if we continue to win, we’ll continue to get a little bit better and a little bit more comfortable with the surroundings. Certainly I believe the opponents get better with each round. We’re going to have to play the winner of this great match out there with A&M and Mississippi, both really good teams. One has a lot better cheering section than the other, but either team is going to be a heck of a battle for us. If we’re lucky enough to get by that one. We certainly know the next one doesn’t get any easier.”

Miami Head Coach Mario Rincon:

“Obviously, UCLA is a very good team. I think one through six in singles, they are extremely even. They don’t really have a very strong point, but all of them are consistent. In order to beat a team like that, you’re going to have to play all six matches well. They took it to us in doubles. Our team was a little bit nervous at the beginning of the match. UCLA is a more experienced team. They’ve been in this situation plenty of more times than that, and I think that played a part. I wish that we could play this type of match more often. In the Sweet Sixteen, obviously it’s really hard to get here, but overall I don’t feel that we played a bad match. UCLA was just better than us.”
