QUOTES:
Georgia Tech Head Coach Bryan Shelton:
“I thought that Cal played extremely well. We kind of expected it because we knew how good they were from playing them earlier in the season at national indoors. We knew that we had a small margin; we had to get certain things done out there in order to be successful overall. Not getting the doubles, as all coaches say, didn’t get us started too well. They jumped on us in singles. It just seemed to me that they were just a little bit better than us, or maybe a little bit more than better than us. We were fighting. I was proud of our team. I didn’t see anyone quit out there. They were yelling and screaming and urging everyone on out there. When it’s all said and done, they were just better than us. They didn’t flinch. When they got up in games, they went through us. A lot of times, college players in tight pressure moments, you’ll see that they’ll backtrack a little bit. Cal didn’t today. I think they’re a very experienced, solid team. I think that they could go far into this tournament if they continue to play like they did today.”
California Head Coach Amanda Augustus:
“I think the doubles point was really important because we knew when Georgia Tech wins the doubles point it lifts their level quite a bit. We had a great No. 1 doubles today. That’s the best they’ve played in probably a month. No. 2, we had Marina Cossou out for about a month and a half this season with an injury so they’re still working it out. Our No. 3 team really played great tonight. I thought that really gave us good momentum going into singles. We really lifted our game in singles. Our goal for the match was to not let them in the match because we know they are a really good team. I was surprised when he took two of his girls out after the doubles. I’m not really sure why but I think that helped us out a bit too.
(On how list year’s run to the finals helped prepare the team this year) “All year long when we were training last year was getting them to constantly see the possibility. I think in the tournament last year we were emotionally drained by the time we got to the final. This year is a bit different with three girls who were here last year and three new girls but who knew this was the expectation. I think that’s helped us push harder. I think mentally we are more prepared this year and we know what to expect so we’ve been able to coach them on it.”
