QUOTES:

Ohio State Head Coach Ty Tucker

“I thought we played pretty good. The one thing about it is we’ve been here for the past two days and it’s probably been 30 mph winds. But today it was 6-8 mph winds; it was nice. It felt good out there. Hopefully that’s the kind of weather that can stay up because I think that gives you a better chance to see some better tennis. But that wind is going to blow and it’s going to hit 25-30 mph at some point during this tournament if you keep staying in. I was proud of the way the guys fought out there today and the way we were about to get the break in the second doubles match to secure the doubles point. Once we get that doubles point we are pretty tough to beat. One through six in the lineup, we’ve never had a team that’s this capable, and we look forward to the challenge of playing Baylor, 80 miles down the road and probably the hottest team in the country for the last two months. We look forward to getting out there to take our shots, but we definitely know the toughest match we have to play in the past two or three months is staring us in the face.”

Boise State Head Coach Greg Patton

“Our whole thing is based on the doubles. We’ve won the doubles point 24 times and we’ve won 24 matches. Now we lost our ninth, and that doubles is a big key. Their guys are junkyard dogs. They fight for the ball as hard as they can. I don’t think we are that talented at Nos. 5 and 6, but I think those guys fight so hard, and they are just great kids. I think we are just as good as anybody in the nation at one through three and I think our No. 4 is getting better where he can compete at the highest level as a freshman. Once they took that doubles point, then that put a lot of pressure on our guys to perform. Clancy Shields is like Atlas. He has been holding up this team up all season, and obviously Kean Feeder has been super consistent.

“They are so tough, they win the doubles point and then at least when we’ve lost the doubles point we’ve battled and won two or three points in the match. So we usually just don’t get that fourth point, but at least we are a 4-2, or 4-3 when the matches are called, but this time they jumped out and won the first set on five of the six singles and were in a tiebreaker on the other. That has never happened to us this year. That just shows how good they are.

“We like being at the net, but they were just better at the baseline, ripping at us at the net. I felt probably more confident going into the doubles against Ohio State than I have been against most schools because I knew that they were unorthodox and I thought we were ready for them. But they just do what they do so well and they just executed so well.

“I’m really proud of this team. They are unbelievable young men, and as far as I’m concerned, even though I am losing four of them, it is something that I can build upon, and that is what you want to do. I think in some ways we were overachievers all season, so I’m not singing any blues, but I’m not singing rock-n-roll either, it’s just kind of more of a lot love songs.”
