Miami Head Coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews: “I think our girls got off to a fairly good start even though doubles didn’t go our way. I was happy with their energy. They stayed calm and we knew coming into today’s match that we needed to stay calm to be successful.”
(On Miami’s run during a couple of the second sets) “UCLA is a great team and if something isn’t working they’re going to change it up. It was big for our girls to step up and notice the changes. It says a lot about the girls that they were able to stay so poised in a big situation.
“I have a lot of respect for UCLA, and for me it’s nice to win any match in this tournament. The fact that they’re defending national champions makes it even more of a feather in our cap. We’ve had some great battles, some great wars against (UCLA) in the past. They’re great people and good tennis players and I want to beat them as bad as I want to beat any other team.”
Miami Sophomore Bianca Eichkorn: “I try not to pay too much attention to the score so the first time I really noticed that it might come down to me was when (Gabriela Mejia) finished her singles match and we had three points. I was so happy that (Claudia Wasilewski) was still out there on court six because that took the pressure off me a little bit. I’m very proud of the whole team. That was a team effort. We were very relaxed this morning and everyone felt like we could win this match. I had a good feeling when I woke up this morning.”
UCLA Head Coach Stella Sampras Webster: “Going into the match we were prepared for a battle and that’s what it was today. I thought we did a great job coming out and winning that doubles point. I really have to give it to that Miami team, they came out and played well and played with a lot of heart. I felt like we had a chance in the second sets of a couple of those matches. If we could have one a couple of those second sets we could have turned some things around. We weren’t able to do that though and Miami did a good job of closing it out.
“Our team did a good job of preparing to play. We knew what Miami was going to give us as far as a tough, feisty team. I don’t think any of that affected the outcome, Miami just played better than we did in singles. We just weren’t able to find a way to win a couple of those second sets in those matches. It’s disappointing because we had opportunities and we couldn’t execute.”
