COLLEGE STATION-Among the 3,750 Texas A&M degree
candidates set to participate in three commencement ceremonies on the main
campus this weekend at Reed Arena are 42 Aggie student-athletes.
"Earning a college degree is one of the main reasons our
young people accept an athletic scholarship to attend Texas A&M," Texas
A&M Director of Athletics Eric Hyman said. "These young people have put in
a lot of time, effort and dedication to achieve this milestone. We could not be
more proud of them. Also, I would like to congratulate their families and the
people who have supported them throughout their lives."
"I have been impressed with our student-athletes in not only
achieving great success on the various playing fields, but in their
participation in community events such as Aggies Can, Toys for Tots, coat
drives and speaking to various schools about the importance of education and
doing your best in all areas," Hyman continued. "These student-athletes are
great representatives of Texas A&M and we are all very proud of them."
Commencement ceremonies at Reed Arena are set for 9 a.m. and
2 p.m. Friday with a 9 a.m. Saturday ceremony scheduled as well. The Saturday
ceremony will include the commissioning of approximately 30 members of the
Corps of Cadets into the Army, Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps. Texas A&M
has established a new tradition as graduating veterans will be presented
special red, white and blue cords in recognition for their service to their
country. While all veterans receiving degrees will be eligible for the special
recognition, military regulations prohibit wearing any such items by personnel
who are in uniforms, including members of the Corps of Cadets. However, all
veterans who will be in academic regalia are invited to wear their new cords at
the commencement ceremonies.
