HEAD MEN'S BASKETBALL COACH BILLY KENNEDY
On taking care of the basketball:
"I think we can run better. When you have three guards that
are all running, sometimes they don't push their lanes or push their wings like
we want to. I think we can attack more to keep the tempo up offensively. All of
our guards do a good job of getting into the lane and finding each other. If
you have that, it's hard to argue with how we're playing. As long as we
continue to play unselfish offensively, we'll be able to win some games.
On J-Mychal Reese's offensive production:
"He scores in practice. He's still learning what we want.
He's trying to adjust his game from being the primary scorer and the primary
everything. He needs to learn to make the simple plays. As he gets more
experience, he will learn that it's tougher to thread needles and that he's
better off just making the simple plays. It's going to take time for all of our
young guys. He had 15 points in the exhibition game. He did some good things.
It'll come. We need to be patient with him."
On Kourtney Roberson:
"Kourtney's been a pleasant surprise. Having not practiced
for about ten months and then come in and be able to play and have fresh legs
has been good to see. We'll know a little bit more. The last two teams we've
played have played four guards. We're going to learn a little bit more about
our team and about Kourtney as we play teams with more traditional post play."
On what to look for against Prairie View:
"We're looking for continued improvement. That team was hard
to play last night. Troy's a good team. They spread you out. We could've
contested threes a little better than we did last night. Hopefully we can do a
better job getting out on shooters and recognizing people on this level are
capable of making threes. We've got to have a better sense of urgency on the
defensive end.
On the 21-assists and eight turnovers:
"That was very impressive. I don't think we had 21 assists
in a single game last season. When guys are unselfish and take care of the ball
on the offensive end, it breeds confidence in your team. I think Caruso makes
the extra pass, then Elston makes the extra pass. It makes everyone else make
the extra pass. It makes you harder to guard and a better offensive team.
On getting to the free-throw line:
"If we can push the tempo and we think the guards can get in
the lane and get fouled. We've proved so far that we're a good free-throw
shooting team. I'm kind of surprised, to be honest with you, because we were so
bad last year. There's some better scorers that are getting fouled. That's how
we want to play. If we can get in the lane and get some fouls on the other
team, that's going to help us be successful.
On seeing improvement:
"We'll find out about ourselves a little more at practice
today and tomorrow. We don't want to get a big head by any means. We beat teams
at homes that we should've beaten. You find out a lot more at practice,
sometimes, than at games. We've got a long way to go. We've got to rebound the
ball better; although, we rebounded pretty well last night. There's a lot of
work yet to be done with the schedule we've got coming up.
