COLLEGE
STATION, Texas-The No. 23 Texas A&M women's golf team will compete this
weekend at the Liz Murphey Fall Preview hosted by Georgia in Athens, Ga.
The Aggies are competing after tying for sixth at
the Mason Rudolph Intercollegiate in Franklin, Tenn. Sept. 21-23. While there,
juniors Natalie Reeves and Chelsea Mocio tied individually for 13th
and 17th, respectively. Additionally, senior Mary Michael Maggio
placed 22nd.
The 54-hole tournament will be played on the UGA
golf course which was ranked as one of the top 50 courses in the country by Golf Digest. The par-72 course stretches
7,240 yards and has hosted such prestigious events as the NCAA Championship,
the SEC tournament and NCAA Regionals.
"It's called a preview for that reason," said
A&M head coach Trelle McCombs. "We get to preview the course we're going to
play on for nationals. I have played on this golf course when I was younger and
I have taken a team from A&M to this course as well. It's a great golf
course, but you really need to control your golf ball. It's an honor for us to
have been chosen to come back. Typically, you get an invite to this preview
based upon how you performed the previous year, either at nationals or on your
final ranking."
The Aggies will be represented by seniors Maggio
and Sarah Beth Davis and juniors Reeves, Mocio and Katerina Ruzickova.
"Chelsea Mocio came in to this season after not
really traveling all that much last year," recounted McCombs. "It was a down
year for her. She came out for the first tournament and won the qualifier, so
that really spoke volumes for her. It's one thing to win the qualifier and another
to do well at the tournament. She placed in the top 20 for the first time and
counted all three rounds for us. That was huge for her. She's back in the
line-up this week and I'm looking for her to just do the same things and the
results will take care of themselves. Overall, I think it's a very strong
team."
The first round begins at 8am (EST) Friday. The
Aggies are paired with Tennessee and Duke and will tee off from the 10th hole.
Live scoring from the event will be available at GolfStat.com.
