FRANKLIN, TENN. - The No. 15 Texas A&M women's golf team opened up its season Friday, shooting 14 over par with a score of 302 in the first round of the Mason Rudolph Intercollegiate.

The Aggies sit in sixth place in the tournament, tied with Michigan State and Stanford. Texas leads with a score of 294 (+6), followed by Arizona (+10), Kentucky (+11), Virginia (+12) and Georgia (+13). Wake Forest (+15) is at ninth, with Vanderbilt (+16), Oregon (+17), Tulane (+21), North Carolina (+22), Chattanooga (+23) and Memphis (+33) following successively.

"I saw a lot of good things out there for us today that won't be reflected in our score," A&M head coach Trelle McCombs said. "I'm really excited to see how this team responds tomorrow, only being eight shots out of the lead. We can put up a good number tomorrow and put ourselves right back into contention."

Junior Chelsea Mocio leads the team with a score of 74, two over par and is tied at 14th place. Seniors Susy Grunden and Mary Michael Maggio and junior Natalie Reeves followed close behind, each with scores of 76.

Senior Sarah Beth Davis rounded out the A&M contingency in the first round with a score of 78.

"The girls were making very good decisions and seemed to be very committed to shots," McCombs asserted. "We just didn't quite make the putts on the last few holes that we made early on in the round."

The tournament's second round will get underway Saturday at 8 a.m. The Aggies are paired with Virginia and Georgia and will begin teeing off from the first hole at 8:45 a.m. Live scoring from the event can be found at GolfStat.com.
