2012 (FRESHMAN) Daniel Mengden proved he could do just about everything in his first season in Aggieland...starting the season in the bullpen as the primary closer for the Aggies, Mengden compiled two saves before being moved into the Tuesday starting role...in his first collegiate start on the mound, Mengden pitched six innings allowing only one hit, a solo home run, he struck out two and received a no-decision...in his next start, Mengden received his first collegiate victory, pitching seven shutout innings against Sam Houston State and striking out four...Mengden finished the year with a 3-4 record, three saves, a 3.83 ERA, with 47.0 innings pitched, allowing 48 hits, 21 runs, striking out 41, and allowing only eight walks...against Oklahoma State, Mengden hit his first career home run...with A&M trailing 4-2 in the top of the 9th, Mengden was called on to pinch-hit with two runners on base, driving the ball over the fence to give the Aggies a 5-4 lead; then in the bottom of the ninth, he shut down the Cowboys by striking out the side to earn the save.
AT WESTSIDE HIGH SCHOOL Played for coach Abe Arguello at Westside High School in Houston, Texas, helping lead the school to the playoffs four consecutive seasons ... a three-time District 20-5A MVP who was also named an Aflac All-American and to the Texas Rangers Area Code Team ... named a THSBCA All-Star following his senior season (2011) ... posted a .375 batting average with four home runs and 25 RBI as a junior (2010) while racking up 45 strikeouts in 35 innings and posting a 2.04 ERA on the mound ... lettered twice for the WHS swimming team ... member of the National Honor Society ... played in the summer for the Houston Heat.
PERSONAL Daniel Joseph Mengden was born Feb. 19, 1993, to parents Joe and Beth Mengden ... father attended Texas A&M, as did his uncle, Walter (A&M Class of ‘81), and cousin, Michael (A&M Class of '11) ... has three sisters, Victoria, Rachel and Gabrielle, and a brother Michael ... majoring in agriculture communications ... aspires to be a sportscaster on ESPN's SportsCenter ... in his leisure time enjoys hunting, fishing, working out, football, soccer and Xbox.
