Endowing Aggie Swimming & Diving Pledge Form Donate Online Here! A LETTER FROM HEAD MEN'S SWIMMING COACH JAY HOLMES:
Howdy Ags,
Endowing collegiate athletic programs is a popular topic of conversation whenever and wherever college coaches gather. The importance of program endowment to the future of intercollegiate swimming and diving cannot be understated in these unce rtain economic times. Everyone has heard the names of the schools that have dropped men's programs due to budget deficits in recent years – Kansas and Iowa State from the Big 12 Conference, Rutgers, Richmond and Miami (Ohio) – to name a few. The collegiate swimming is repeatedly shocked by the sudden elimination of traditional swimming and diving powers like UCLA and Arizona State. In the case of ASU, it was only due to a late and stressful call to their alumni that they have been allowed to continue to compete until they raise the seven-figure funds to sustain their program. They only have a short time to do it. While it is true that some programs have been cut due to budget deficits, it is also a fact that some programs have been kept because of their endowments. It is one of my goals for my time here as your Head Coach to begin and sustain a campaign that will ultimately endow both the men's and women's teams and guarantee our place in NCAA Swimming & Diving. To that goal, the first step is educating our supporters of the importance of program endowment. It sends a message to prospective student-athletes about the type of support they will receive when they sign on with Texas A&M, and the direction of the program. In many ways, an endowment plan is a barometer for the health of a program. Texas A&M is entering its sixth year of this mission. I have said before, and I reiterate here, that Texas A&M is NOT about to drop its Swimming and Diving programs. My concern is for 15-to-20 years from now. What will the financial state of the nation, and college athletics, be? I do not want to keep my head buried in the sand waiting to find out. We need a procative movement among the many people who care about and have a connection to Texas A&M and our program. We need to do the small things now that will pay off when our hard times come. While we do need people who can give big contributions now, what we need the most is for people to give what they can in monthly or yearly gifts that will build over time. Our country is in a hard financial time. Obviously many of us are feeling it every day. It is my hope that people can give what they can. Even a $100 a year can make a huge difference, if enough of us do over time. An effort like this is what teamwork is all about. Below, you will notice the posted names of your friends and teammates that have already contributed. Many thanks to these people. Let's plan for the future of our program now. To contribute, follow the link at the top of this page, or go to http://www.12thmanfoundation.com/championship3/gift.asp. It is important to click 'Swimming & Diving' under the menu -Choose Additional Sport- or call the 12th Man directly at 979-846-8892. Feel free to email or call me at any time.
Thanks for caring about Texas A&M Swimming & Diving.
