28 Aggies Named All-Academic Big 12

28 Aggies were recognized as part of the 2011-2012 Academic All-Big 12 swimming and diving team, as announced Tuesday. To be considered for first-team honors, the athlete must hold a 3.2 GPA or better. Second-team athletes must hold a 3.00-3.19 GPA.

On the men's side, the Aggies had nine first-team athletes and two second-team athletes. Representing the Aggies on the first-team were seniors Amini Fonua and John Ariens, juniors Nick Han, Cheyne Hermes, John Wagner and Austin Wilson and sophomores Simon Frank, Paul-Marc Schweitzer and Donnie Walker.

Senior Boris Loncaric and sophomore Wes Wheeler represented the Aggies on the second-team.

The men's squad posted the most first-team athletes of any Big 12 school with nine. Texas had nine first-team athletes while Missouri had five.

For the women, the Aggies posted a staggering 17 total athletes on the All-Academic teams, with an impressive 15 grabbing first-team honors. Making up the first-team Aggies were sophomores Wylie Escobedo, Kristina Kontrimas, Caroline McElhany, Allyson Sweeney and Kelsey Tomlin, juniors Jordan King, Maureen McLaine, Liz Nelson andChristine Regone, and seniors Alyssa Conner, Megan Latone, Rita Medrano, Megan Onstott, Janie Potvin and Jo Thibodeaux.

Sophomore Cammile Adams and junior Raclin Rehring received second-team honors.

Four Aggies achieved special mention because of perfect GPA averages. Conner, Hermes, Onstott and Schweitzer were four of the six Big 12 swimmers and divers to hold a perfect 4.0 GPA.

The A&M athletes will be competing in the Big 12 Championships starting Wednesday Feb. 22 in Columbia, Mo. Foxsports Network will broadcast the finals and live video of preliminary action will be available at Big12Sports.com
