AUSTIN --- Texas A&M divers Grant Nel and Cam McLean grabbed their spots at the NCAA Men's Swimming & Diving Championships by earning top three finishes on the first day of the Zone D Diving Championships on Friday at the Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
Nel and McLean's qualification means the Aggie men's team will send seven competitors to the NCAA Championships, which will be contested March 24-26 at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minn. The pair of divers joins the Aggies' swimming contingent of senior Balazs Makany, junior Amini Fonua, sophomore John Dalton and freshmen Henrik Lindau and Kyle Troskot.
Nel won the one-meter springboard with a 12-dive score of 785.60, while McLean was third behind Texas' Drew Wilkinson with a score of 713.60. All three divers earned spots to the NCAA Championships. It was the second year that Nel took all the drama out of the Zone qualifying by posting a win on the first day. Last year, Nel won the three-meter on the first day to earn his spot at the NCAA Championships. It is Nel's third straight trip to the national meet, while McLean will be making his second appearance at the NCAAs.
