Boosted by four more top 10 national team finishes, the Texas A&M athletics program jumped nine spots to No. 8 in the latest Division I Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings, the National Association of College Directors of Athletics (NACDA) announced on Friday.

With the 2010-11 athletics season nearly complete, the Aggies have compiled an impressive 1,017.50 points and trail only Stanford (1,526.75), Ohio State (1,277.50), Duke (1,171.50), California (1,141.50), Florida (1,122.25), North Carolina (1,121.75) and Oklahoma (1,039.75).

Leading the Aggies’ charge into the Directors’ Cup top 10 were the NCAA Championship finishes by the men’s and women’s track and field teams, which each contributed 100 points to A&M’s total. Coach Pat Henry’s Aggie squads have now swept the men’s and women’s team titles at the outdoor championships for the past three seasons.

Also contributing big points in the most recent rankings were the Aggies’ men’s golf squad and the women’s softball team. Coach J.T. Higgin’s golfers placed ninth at the NCAA Championships to score 69 points, while Coach Jo Evans’ softball team advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals and contributed 64 points.

The Directors’ Cup final standings will be released June 30, and will include points from Coach Rob Childress’ Big 12 Champion Aggie baseball team, which has advanced to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb.

The highest overall finish in Texas A&M history in the Directors’ Cup standings was last year’s 6th-place showing.
