WACO, Texas - For the first time in school history, Texas A&M captured both the singles and doubles championships at the women's USTA/ITA Texas Regional, with Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar (pronounced KEEN-tah-nar) winning the singles title and Cristina Stancu and Stefania Hristov teaming to take the doubles championship today at the Hurd Tennis Center.

The champions earn automatic bids to the prestigious ITA National Indoor Championships, to be played Nov. 8 -11 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York.

"One of the things that we spoke about this morning is the prize in winning the tournament is actually the automatic bid to go to New York City," A&M coach Howard Joffe said. "For any young lady, that is a big deal. As a coach, I tried to explain to them that I'm more interested in concentrating on trying to play good tennis. But coaching aside, the fact is for both our finalists and the opposition, it just has a lot more on it because winning means you go to New York City and losing guarantees you nothing.

"The one thing that our kids do recognize, regardless of getting the trip to New York or winning and losing, is that all of us need to get a little bit better. They have been very mature about that. So in relationship to winning this tournament, I'm delighted with them and probably even more delighted from the point of view of the level of maturity and understanding that the year is long and that we need to continue to improve and get better."

Playing doubles together for the first time, Romanian compatriots Stancu and Hristov won six consecutive matches, including an 8-5 victory against Nikki Sanders and Rashmi Teltumbde of Texas Tech in the finals to capture the title. Earlier in the tournament, the unseeded Aggie duo stunned sixth-ranked and No. 1 seed Samantha Adams and Kenna Kilgo, also of Texas Tech, 9-7, in the round of 16 to advance.

"Since they are both countrywomen, they have been wanting and waiting to play together," Joffe said about the Aggie pair. "They finally got the opportunity, and they certainly impressed. They played very, very sound doubles. I believe the team will actually improve and get much better, but they played very intelligently and did a great job. They were pretty much in control of the match the whole time."

Sanchez-Quintanar, the tournament's runner-up in 2011, lived up to her No. 1-seed billing en route to the title, winning six consecutive matches, including a 6-2, 0-6, 6-3 victory against No. 7 seed Ema Burgic of Baylor in the championship match.

"I think Cristina was a little bit nervous the entire match," Joffe said. "I definitely don't believe it was one of her better matches in terms of how well she performed and played, and yet she was as mentally strong and as tough as anyone could be. She absolutely deserved the win."

In both singles and doubles, the Aggies had to play against A&M teammates in the semifinals to advance. Ranked an A&M record-high No. 4 in the ITA preseason singles rankings, Sanchez-Quintanar topped Stancu, 7-5, 7-5, in a singles semifinal, and Stancu and Hristov held off A&M seniors Nazari Urbina and Wen Sun, 8-5, in the doubles semifinals.

"We happen to have three people who won, but I'm delighted with the whole group because the performance over the fall so far and certainly in this tournament has been very, very strong," Joffe concluded.
