Aggies Go 10-0 on Day 1 at Texas Regional
"Our ladies acquitted themselves very well today," A&M head coach Howard Joffe said. "In some instances we played very well and in others only fair, but I'm proud of the way that everyone fought and handled themselves."
Freshmen Stefania Hristov and Anna Mamalat each picked up a pair of singles victories. Hristov topped Solomlya Zinko of Rice, 6-1, 6-0 in the first round of the 128-player field and then cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 second-round victory over Helene Czudek of Lamar.
Mamalat opened the first round by holding off Liselot Koenen of Houston, 6-2, 6-7 (6), 6-1. Mamalat then came from behind to defeat Gabriela Rojas of Texas State, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, to advance to the round of 32.
A&M's four other singles entries had byes in the first round and notched victories in the round of 64 to advance to the round of 32. No. 1 seed Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar defeated Elizabeth Thoms of UTA, 6-0, 6-0, and Wen Sun knocked off Alena Shickova of UTSA, 6-1, 6-0. In addition, third-seeded Cristina Stancu defeated Liat Zimmerman of Rice, 6-3, 6-2, and No. 5 seed Narzari Urbina defeated Tatyana Postnikova of Sam Houston State, 6-0, 6-3.
A&M also picked up a pair of doubles victories as Hristov and Stancu teamed to defeat Victoria Parshikova and Agustina Valenzuela of North Texas, 8-1, and Mamalat and Sanchez-Quintanar defeated Wanda Beguelin and Anastasia Burobina of Texas-Pan American, 8-4.
Fifth-seed Urbina and Sun had a bye in the 64-team first-round.
Doubles action resumes Saturday at 8 a.m. and singles matches begin at 11:15 a.m.
