IRVING, Texas - Three Texas A&M men’s tennis players and two Aggie women’s tennis players were among 49 student-athletes honored by the Big 12 Conference as the 2012 Academic All-Big 12 tennis teams were announced today.

On the Aggie men’ side, junior Niall Angus, from London, England, is a repeat first-team selection and he is joined on the first-team by senior co-captain Colin Hoover, from Victoria, Texas. Senior John Lewis, from Birmingham, Alabama, was named to the men’s second-team honor team.

On the Aggie women’s side, senior Sheri Olivier, from Topeka, Kansas, was named to the first-team elite squad for the third consecutive year. Junior Janelle Cuthbertson, from Perth, Australia, was named to the second-team honor squad.

The Academic All-Big 12 Tennis Team includes 34 (15 men, 19 women) first team honorees and 15 (six men, nine women) second team members. A total of 28 women (19 first team, nine second team) earned honors, while 21 men (15 first team, six second team) garnered accolades.

First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.

Texas A&M will serve as host for the 2012 Big 12 Tennis Championships being held at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center on the Aggie campus this weekend. Both the Aggie men’s and women’s teams will play Friday (Apr. 27) with the men opening play against Texas and first serve is set for 12 noon, while the women are slated to face Kansas State at 3 p.m. For ticket information, go to AggieAthletics.com and click on tickets or call 1-888-99-AGGIE (888-992-4443).
