Missouri Takes 2-0 Walk-Off Win in SEC Opener
COLUMBIA, Mo. - The No. 5 Texas A&M softball team (22-2, 0-1 SEC) dropped a 0-2 walk-off decision to fifth-ranked Missouri (10-1, 1-0 SEC) in the first-ever Southeastern Conference contest for the schools, Friday at University Field. The game was the first of a three-game conference series that will continue tomorrow at 2 p.m. CST.
An intense pitchers' duel ended in a seventh-inning two-run home run by the Tigers that gave the Aggies just their second loss of the season as Missouri started its SEC career at 1-0.
After becoming the first Aggie to reach base on a walk in the top of the third, junior Taran Tyler pounded a double to the wall in centerfield for the first hit of the game. She was followed on the bags by pinch hitter Sydney Shannon, who drew a walk, but the pair was left marooned in the end of the half-inning.
Mizzou added their first hit of the game, a single into shallow centerfield in the bottom of the inning. A ball chipped just behind the infield in the previous at-bat was almost a hit, but Aggie left fielder Brittany Clopton sprinted and dove for the highlight-reel catch.
The Tigers put runners on base in the first and second innings on walks, but both were left on first as the Aggie defense ended the frames.
With the game locked in a 0-0 tie and two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Mizzou left fielder Mackenzie Sykes lined a double to left field. In the next at-bat, Kelsea Roth hit a two-RBI home run over left field for the walk-off win.
A&M senior Mel Dumezich suffered her first loss of the season from the circle, throwing a complete game and giving up two earned runs on three hits and two walks while fanning two. Missouri's Chelsea Thomas (4-0) struck out 11 batters and gave up one hit while walking two.
