COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Texas A&M softball senior Mel Dumezich was named to the Top 50 Watch List for the 2013 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year, the softball national governing body announced today.

Dumezich (Whiting, Ind.) earned a spot on the list for the first time in her career. The right-handed pitcher was recently named Preseason All-SEC in the Aggies' first year in the Southeastern Conference.

Dumezich will face the SEC for the first time after stunning the Big 12 as both a pitcher and a power hitter. The then-junior recorded a 2.01 ERA (1.91 Big 12) in 59 starts and 31 complete games last season, pitching eight shutouts and fanning 307 batters. She has found herself on the All-Big 12 team each season of her A&M career, and owns three conference player-of-the-week honors and two spots on the NFCA/Louisville Slugger All-Central Region first team. Dumezich has proved her strength in the circle and at the plate - at the end of her junior season, she ranked 10th in the country in home runs (20) and 12th in strikeouts thrown.

Dumezich joins 26 seniors, 15 juniors and eight sophomores in the group that will be narrowed to 25 finalists on April 10. The SEC and the Pac-12 led the way with eight schools represented on the list.

An athlete does not have to be on the Top 50 Watch List to be considered for the Top 25 Finalists, but the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year will come from the final 25. The Top 10 will be announced May 8, and the Top 3 will be selected on May 22. The winner will be revealed on May 28 prior to the start of the Women's College World Series (WCWS) in Oklahoma City.

Dumezich will lead the 17th-ranked Aggies into their first game this season at the Stacy Winsberg Tournament in Los Angeles on Feb. 8. To learn more about Texas A&M softball, log on to AggieAthletics.com.
