COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- With a blue moon in the sky and the Scarlet Knights on the pitch, the Maroon and White prevailed as the No. 17 Texas A&M Soccer team posted a 4-1 win over No. 16 Rutgers at Ellis Field on Friday evening.

Rutgers (4-1) drew first blood with their initial shot of the contest in 24th minute of action. With Texas A&M taking the first nine shots of the game the Scarlet Knights finally threatened with a corner kick. Rutgers sent an offering into the penalty box but the Aggies were unsuccessful in an attempt to clear the ball allowing Amanda Devolk to put the ball into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.

Texas A&M (3-1) took its first lead of the game in the 31st minute. Meghan Streight took a short-range shot in the goal area that was saved, but bounced away. Once again Monogue benefited off the carom for the goal and the 2-1 lead.

The Aggies tacked on an insurance goal in the 51st minute. After a collision on the end line, the referee granted a penalty kick for Texas A&M. Allie Bailey stymied Scarlet Knights' reserve goalkeeper Jessica Janosz on the penalty kick to give the Aggies a 3-1 advantage.

Texas A&M capped off the scoring in the 78th minute. Annie Kunz collected the ball near the right corner of the penalty box and unleashed a laser to the side netting on the far post for the 4-1 advantage.

The Aggies owned a 20-10 advantage in shots, including 12-3 in the first half. Kunz, Monogue and Shea Groom each had four shots. All four of Monogue's shots were on goal.

The Aggies return to action on Sunday with a 1:30 p.m. contest against the Saint Mary's (Calif.) Gaels.

TEXAS A&M QUOTES

Head Coach G Guerrieri:

On responding to the early deficit: One of the things we talked about is we know we have a talented team it's a matter of coming out and showing that desire that we're going to take care of whatever we have to do to win so at the time we haven't given up a shot, I don't know what it was at the time, maybe nine-nothing, they get one shot and it goes in off the crossbar on a missed cleared ball by us. That was disappointing, but I was really pleased by the response our players had pretty soon after and then we took the lead right after that.

On Rutgers Physicality: They're a very athletic team. They're very well coached. They're going to compete for every ball. They're going to be a little bit more physical than we are so we knew that was going to be a challenge for us. I thought our girls stepped up to it well and kept their heads as the game went on we got to be more and more in control of the game.

On beating a highly ranked team: Rutgers is a great team. They're having a great season. They've had some real good wins. They beat Ohio State. They came in here undefeated. They're nationally ranked. We respected them a lot coming in because of the talent they had on their team. It just happened to be a good night for us. I know they're going to win a lot of games this year.

Sophomore forward Kelley Monogue

On the win: This win was really good for us. In the long run it will help us with seeding in the NCAA tournament. It's always good to beat a ranked team and get our confidence up.

On scoring a goal off the bench: It really helped with the subs with the fresh momentum. We knew we needed to get a goal back and tie it up right away.

On how this game will help with the SEC schedule: We'll play a lot of tough teams in the SEC that games will come down to the last second and us being able to fight until the end will be a really good thing for us.

On the offense game-plan: Just before the game we talked about how we wanted to put a high pressure on their defense. We watched film on them and I think that the high pressure put them in an uncomfortable position so that helped us a lot offensively.
