COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Texas A&M soccer junior Beth West was named one of 10 female finalists for the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award, as announced today by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education magazine.

The Centennial, Colo., native, was selected to the list of 10 finalists from an original pool of over 600 minority student-athletes. Finalists were required to maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher and to be active on their campuses or in their communities.

West led the Big 12 with 14 assists this season, a stat that now tops the A&M record books. She ended the season ranked fourth in the nation in assists and fifth in assists per game. West also took All-Big 12 first team, Academic All-Big 12 first team and NCAA All-Central Region third team honors this season.

Other women's soccer players on the list were Oklahoma State's Krista Lopez and Pepperdine's Karissa Garcia. OSU softball player Chelsea Garcia also represented the Big 12 as one of the 10 finalists. The winners, one male and one female, will be profiled in the May 24 edition of Diverse.

The Big 12 Champion Texas A&M soccer team hosts Southern Methodist in its final exhibition match of the spring season this Saturday at 1 p.m. at Ellis Field. To learn more about Texas A&M soccer, log on to AggieAthletics.com or follow @AggieSoccer on Twitter.
