Soccer Tops Rice in 89th Minute
COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Big 12 Champion Texas A&M soccer team opened the spring season with a 1-0, 89th-minute victory over Rice at Ellis Field Sunday.
"It was another beautiful Sunday afternoon at Ellis Field and, for our first exhibition match of the year, we saw some good things out of our team," head coach G Guerrieri said. "We will be able to use this game as quality evaluation and a starting point from which to begin as we continue developing this team of talented players."
Freshman Katie Perry netted the lone goal in the final minutes of the match on an assist by classmate Allie Bailey.
"The goal was set up with some good passing interplay with our midfielders and forwards, and was finished off with a powerful, dipping strike by Katie Perry," Guerrieri said.
The Aggies and Owls battled through almost an entire scoreless match, despite several scoring attempts by both teams. A&M edged Rice, 17-to-13 in shots and 9-to-5 in shots on goal. The Aggies also forced eight saves by the Owls, compared to three of their own, while Rice took six corner kicks over two by A&M. Freshman Jordan Day spent the match in goal.
"Jordan Day had a good performance in goal and continues to get better and better," head coach G Guerrieri said. "Rachel Lenz did very well in the center of our defense, especially in the second half."
The Aggies are 1-0 in the spring exhibition season with a Thursday match vs. Sam Houston State up next. Thursday's game is slated for a 7 p.m. start at Ellis Field and will be FREE to the public.
