COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The defending Big 12 Champion Texas A&M soccer team is prepared to take on a challenging spring slate that includes four games at the Aggies' own Ellis Field and a match in the Dallas suburb of Farmers Branch, Texas.
The Aggies kick off the 2012 exhibition season on Sunday, March 25 when they host Rice at Ellis Field at 4 p.m. A 7 p.m. Thursday, March 29 game against Sam Houston State ends the home stand before the Aggies travel to Farmers Branch, Texas to play the University of North Texas at the Ross Stewart Soccer Complex on Saturday, April 7 at 1 p.m.
"We are looking forward to our spring and I know a lot of our out-of-town fans are circling the date for our match vs. the University of North Texas up in the Dallas-Fort Worth area over Easter weekend," head coach G Guerrieri said. "This exhibition is being hosted by the Dallas International Girls Cup, which is run in coordination with the Dr. Pepper Dallas Cup, one of the most prestigious international youth tournaments in the world.
"UNT is coming off a great 2011 season, where they won the Sun Belt Conference Championship," Guerrieri said. "Their coach, John Hedlund, is an old friend and former teammate from way back when we were kids growing up in the north Dallas area. And, as an added bonus, the site of the match in Farmers Branch is named after an Aggie and one of the greatest ambassadors of youth soccer in the United States in the 1970s, 80s and 90s - Mr. Ross Stewart.
"That UNT match will be our only road exhibition match of the spring season, so we are looking forward to the opportunity to showcase our team and great players outside of Aggieland. All of our players are on Spring Break this week and will start to focus on our spring season opener as soon as they return to Aggieland this weekend, starting with next weekend's home match vs. Rice. I hope our fans are as excited about our spring schedule as our coaches and players are."
A&M will close out the spring slate at home with a Saturday, April 14, game against Big 12 opponent Baylor and a Saturday, April 21, match vs. Southern Methodist. The Baylor game will begin at 7 p.m., while the SMU game is slated for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
The Aggies' home games will be played at Ellis Field, located at 922 Olsen Blvd. in College Station. The Ross Stewart Soccer Complex, site of the A&M-North Texas match, is at 1777 Keenan Bridge Rd. in Farmers Branch.
Admission to each match this spring is FREE to the public. Parking will also be FREE to the public for all Ellis Field matches in Lot 100 at Reed Arena, except when a match conflicts with an A&M baseball game. To learn more about Texas A&M soccer, log on to AggieAthletics.com.
