No. 3 Seed A&M to Host LSU in NCAA First Round
COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The No. 21 Texas A&M soccer team learned Monday that it will host Louisiana State in the first round of Aggies' 17th consecutive NCAA Tournament at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Ellis Field.
The No. 3 seeded Aggies enter the NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championship on an automatic bid with a 15-5-2 record after winning the Big 12 Tournament title and finishing second in the conference in regular-season play.
LSU (13-7-1) was the Southeastern Conference runner-up this season. This is the fourth NCAA appearance for the Tigers, having made three consecutive postseason appearances in 2007-09.
This marks the second meeting between A&M and LSU. The Aggies and Tigers last met in the 2009 NCAA Second Round. The teams tied 1-1 before the Aggies advanced in a 4-2 penalty-kick shootout.
Five teams from the Big 12 made the 64-team bracket including Kansas, No. 2 seed Oklahoma State, Texas, Baylor and No. 3 seed A&M who earned an automatic bid by winning the Big 12 Tournament this past Sunday.
The NCAA Tournament continues with the second and third rounds Nov. 18-20, and quarterfinal play on Nov. 25. The College Cup is set for Dec. 2 and 4 in Kennesaw, Ga.
"Obviously we're happy," head coach G Guerrieri said. "By winning the conference yesterday and getting the automatic qualifier, it's great. It's 17 years in-a-row for us. This is the third year in-a-row that we have probably the hardest first-and-second round possibilities, as far as games. We'll have to take that and play as hard as we possibly can. We know that LSU is an excellent team. They've beaten some of the teams that are seeded in this tournament. It's a game that, for us, has to be circled and really studied. We played them two years ago and prevailed in penalty kicks."
