IRVINE, Calif. - The 12th-ranked Texas A&M Soccer team will play UC Irvine in an exhibition match Wednesday at 9 p.m. CST at Anteater Stadium.
The teams met in a regular-season game in 2012 with the Aggies winning their season-opener 2-1 in Irvine. Bianca Brinson scored A&M’s first goal in the 40th minute of the contest and UCI’s Zuri Walker tied the contest 37 seconds before halftime. Kelley Monogue tallied the game-winner in the 83rd minute. Shea Groom assisted on both goals for Texas A&M.
The Aggies, who return seven starters from last year's squad and add seven newcomers, were picked to win the SEC Western Division and overall SEC crown in the league’s preseason coaches’ poll. A&M is led by 2012 NSCAA All-America Third Team selection in midfielder Meghan Streight. The Maroon and White also return four All-SEC performers with Streight, goalkeeper Jordan Day and forwards Groom and Annie Kunz.
Texas A&M posted an historic season in 2012, finishing with a 19-5-1 overall record and winning the SEC Western Division title with a 10-2-1 league ledger. A&M's 19 wins was one shy of the school record and the Aggies posted a school-record 15 shutouts on the year. The Aggies finished the 2012 campaign ranked No. 14 in the NSCAA/Continental Tire rankings.
UC Irvine posted a 9-8-4 overall record and finished fourth in the Big West Conference with a 5-1-3 mark. The Anteaters return six starters from last season. The group is headlined by All-West Region and All-Big West Conference First Team forward Natalia Ledezma who tallied three goals and six assists a year ago. Juniors Cami Privett (2011 Big West Freshman of the Year) and Laura McGrail (six goals and four game-winning goals in 2012) also return to the attack.
