COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Texas A&M soccer fans voted on the Top 5 Moments of the 2011 Aggie Soccer Season and the results are in. "Majewski's Last-Minute Magic" took 41 percent of the votes to be named the No. 1 moment of the 2011 Aggie soccer season.
"Tar Heel Turnaround" came in second with 23 percent of the votes, followed closely by "Freshman Frenzy" with 22 percent.
A&M leaves the Big 12 Conference next season with its head held high and a 12th-and-final Big 12 trophy in tow. The second-seeded Aggies reached the Big 12 Tournament final after advancing past Kansas and Missouri in the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds. The team would take on Oklahoma State - a team with a No. 2 national ranking and the No. 1 seed in the Conference Tournament. The Aggies and Cowgirls had met once before this season, in a 0-0 double-overtime draw at Ellis Field that had been televised nationally on ESPNU.
The two nationally-ranked teams butted heads through 89 minutes in front of another national television audience (this time on Fox Sports Net), and the scoreless game looked like it would again go into overtime.
With just 15 seconds remaining, the Aggies started a determined rally at the OSU goal. Senior Merritt Mathias led the attack, taking a shot that was blocked by a Cowgirl defender. Freshman forward Kelley Monogue weaved through three defenders and fired a shot from 14 yards that beat the OSU goalkeeper but ricocheted off of the left post. The ball crossed through the six-yard box on the bounce and landed near senior Megan Majewski. The powerful midfielder calmly controlled the ball with a first touch and sent the ball back toward goal with her second touch, and with nine seconds left on the clock netted the dramatic championship-winning goal for Texas A&M.
