Davis Eliminated at U.S. Women’s Am
CLEVELAND - Texas A&M women's golfer Sarah Beth Davis was eliminated in the round of 32 at the U.S. Women's Amateur on Thursday.
For the second straight day, Davis faced a 2012 USA Curtis Cup team member and in the second round of match play fell, 3 and 2, to LSU's Austin Ernst.
From Victoria, Texas, Davis did not allow Ernst more than a 1-up lead through 14 holes at the 6,512-yard, par-72 course at The Country Club. She squared the match several times - on the par-3 fifth, the seventh and again on the 10th. Ernst, however, won the 12th with a birdie and went on to birdie No. 15 and No. 16 to win the match.
Davis advanced to the round of 32 with a 3 and 2 victory Wednesday over Emily Tubert, also a 2012 Curtis Cup team member. She earned a spot in match play with a 36-hole stroke play score of a 5-over 149 (71-79).
The U.S. Women's Amateur is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs. Other match-play rounds continue throughout the week with a 36-hole final scheduled for Sunday.
