Maggio and Grunden Strong at WWGA National Amateur Championship
MONROE, Mich. - Texas A&M's Mary Michael Maggio advanced to the quarterfinals and Susy Grunden to the Round of 16 at the 112th Women's Western Golf Association (WWGA) National Amateur Championship at the Monroe Golf and Country Club last week.
After a pair of qualifying rounds to begin the championship, Maggio (Conway, Ark.) finished second with a two-day total of 143 (71-72). Gruden (Krum, Texas) finished the qualifying rounds tied for 23rd with a 36-hole score of 151 (72-79). Based on their scores, both Aggies were placed in the Championship Flight and spent the rest of the week playing rounds of single elimination Match Play.
In the first round of Match Play, Maggio defeated Emily Haas, 4 and 3, while Grunden defeated Melanie Audette, 2 up. In the second round, Maggio beat Christine Wong, 4 and 2 and Grunden took care of her competitor, Jayvie Agojo, 2 and 1.
Grunden fell in the Round of 16 to Moriya Jutanugarn, 5 and 3. It was Grunden's 21st birthday and after her match was over, she went back out and caddied for Maggio. Maggio outlasted Asia Adell to win the match on the 13th extra hole. On the 13th hole, Maggio was on the back fringe in three shots, and Adell was 30 yards in front of the green in three. Adell's approach shot left her with a 25-foot putt which missed the cup by inches. Maggio drained her 10-foot putt from off the green to take the match, which ended at almost 9 p.m. Their match appeared to be the longest amount of extra holes played in the history of the WWGA.
It was Jutanugarn that also knocked Maggio out of the championship, 4 and 3 in the quarterfinals. Jutanugarn faced her sister, Ariya Jutanugarn in the finals, and A. Jutanugarn defeated M. Jutanugarn, 2 and 1 to win the 2012 WWGA Amateur Championship.
The field at the championship featured 140 players from 31 states and six countries, with some outstanding junior and amateur ranked players. For more information about the Women's Western Golf Association and the Women's Western Golf Foundation, please visit our website at www.WWGA.org.
