Aggie Women Seek NCAA Berth at West Regional
STANFORD, Calif. – The 27th ranked and No. 8-seeded Texas A&M women’s golf team looks for its fifth NCAA Championship berth in the last six years when the Aggies begin play at the NCAA West Regional on Thursday at the Stanford Golf Course.
The top eight teams and two individuals from each of the three regionals advance to the NCAA Championship May 21-24 at the University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens. Ga., hosted by the University of Georgia.
The Aggies; 54-hole event at the par-71, 6,267 yard Stanford Golf Course continues through Saturday. The field includes 24 of the top teams in the country and six additional individuals not on those teams. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
“We are very much looking forward to the first round here at Stanford,” head coach Trelle McCombs said. “This is a beautiful course and we have had good luck playing here in the past.”
Texas A&M is making its 13th straight regional appearance and its 18th in the last 19 season. The Aggies finished in a tie for second at last year’s East Regional in State College, Pa. and advanced to the NCAA Championships for the 12th time in school history.
Joining the Aggies at Stanford are in order; No. 1 Southern California, No. 5 Arizona, No. 8 Vanderbilt, No. 9 Purdue, No. 11 Stanford, No. 18 Georgia and No. 21 Baylor. The rest of the field includes No. 28 LSU, No. 29 Pepperdine, No. 33 Denver, No. 34 South Carolina, No. No. 40 Florida State, No. 41 Oregon, 44 Ohio State, No. 48 UNLV, No. 50 California, Miami (Fla.), San Jose State, Harvard, Kent State, Northern Arizona, North Dakota State and Long Island.
Additionally, the six individuals were selected to participate in at the West Regionals were Laura Wearn of Furman, Jennifer Coleman of Colorado, Sammi Stevens of New Mexico, A Ram Choi of Portland State and teammates Luciane Lee and Michelle Park of UC Irvine.
“I feel like this group of girls can and will do a great job in helping us get back to the national championship,” McCombs added. “Bringing the same group that competed at the SEC Championship will us get out on the course early and attempt to put a good number up on the board.”
The Aggies tee off at 9:30 a.m. (CT) from hole one and are paired with Baylor and Pepperdine for the first round.
