Meet Kay Yow
The late Kay Yow, North Carolina State University's former head women's basketball coach, was a past president and founding member of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), and a galvanizing voice for the Association.Yow was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987. In her 38 years as a head coach at the college-level, Yow is one of only six Division I head women's basketball mentors to achieve 700 career victories. Yow was also the head coach of the 1988 US Olympic Team that won the gold medal in Seoul. Click here for her full biography.
Gary Blair about Coach Yow
"It means a lot to be able to wear the pink ribbon upside down in remembrance of Kay Yow. Kay was very special. We were in the Final Four together and are the old cats in the profession. She did everything with class. As coaches, that's who we envied; someone who didn't have a large ego and someone who gave back to the game. Even though she knew her time was short, she has already touched so many lives across the country with her testimony. Kay has championed the cause, but there are a lot of people out there who are affected by the cause. Whatever we can do, we need to find a way. If we can build off of her legacy similar to how the men's game did with former North Carolina State head coach Jim Valvano, that's a rallying cry. It's a win-win situation not just for cancer, but for an awareness of what women's basketball can do. It's not all about the W's and the L's, it's about the classy people in this game who want to do their part in finding a cure." -- Texas A&M Head Coach Gary Blair on Kay Yow
The Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund was announced on December 3, 2007, during the Jimmy V Classic. The Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund?, in partnership with The V Foundation for Cancer Research, will raise money in the fight against women's cancers. It was appropriate to announce this Fund during the Jimmy V Classic because of the connection between Jim Valvano, former North Carolina State men's head basketball coach, and Kay Yow, North Carolina State women's basketball coach.
