Stancu Advances at ITA All-American Championships
PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – Texas A&M’s Cristina Stancu has advanced to the singles main draw at the prestigious Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championship after winning three matches in the qualifying singles draw Tuesday and Wednesday at the Riviera Tennis Club.
Stancu will face 17th-ranked Zoe Scandalis of USC Thursday in the first round of the 32-player main draw.
Stancu defeated 95th-ranked Kanika Vaidya of Columbia, 7-6 (5), 6-2, in the first round of qualifying singes and then came from behind to knock off 10th-seeded and 38th-ranked Alex Cercone of Florida, 3-6, 7-6 (8), 6-3. Stancu followed with a 7-6 (4), 1-6, 6-2 victory over fourth-seeded and 23rd-ranked Klara Fabikova of California to earn a spot in the main draw.
A&M’s Ines Deheza had earned a lucky-loser berth in the 64-player qualifying round after advancing to the round of 16 in the prequalifying singles draw but fell to Sarah Lee in Michigan, 7-5, 6-4 in the first round. Deheza then dropped a 7-5, 6-4 decision to 53rd-ranked Klara Vyskocilova of Tulane in the first round of the qualifying singles back draw.
Deheza had also advanced to the qualifying doubles draw with partner Rutuja Bhosale after winning three matches in the prequalifying draw. Deheza and Bhosale got a first-round 8-3 victory over No. 59 Karolina Rozenberg and Ebba Unden of Long Beach State before being eliminated by No. 2 seed and 19th-ranked Brynn Boren and Zoe Katz of USC.
Stancu and partner Stefania Hristov received an automatic bid in the main doubles draw. They are the No. 7 seed and received a first round bye. They will face the winner between Utah’s Paige Miles and Tereza Bekerova and Caroline Rohde-Moe and Marija Milutinovic of Ole Miss in the round of 16 on Thursday.
Main draw singles semifinalists, doubles finalists and consolation champions will receive automatic entry into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships Nov. 7-10 in Flushing, N.Y.
